Porth Tocyn Hotel

César award in 1984

The views across Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia are 'stupendous' at this family hotel which has been created organically over 60 years from a group of lead miners' cottages. It is run in individual style by the owners, Nick and Louise Fletcher-Brewer. 'His friendly voice and welcome were instantly recognisable,' say visitors returning after 30 years. Another enthusiast found it 'as good as ever' this year. There is a 'laid-back, homely feel', with traditional furnishings, books, 'interesting knick-knacks'. Most of the bedrooms have a sea view; many have been upgraded ('ours was tastefully refurbished'); they have country antiques, watercolours and prints. Children have a dedicated snug and games in a conservatory. Younger children take high tea at 5.30 pm in the children's room, and 'simple suppers' have been introduced for families seeking flexible dining. An age limit of six is imposed in the restaurant at dinner, where Louise Fletcher-Brewer and Al Manzin serve modern dishes, perhaps loin of venison, mini venison pie, baked fig, chocolate jus. The Welsh Coastal Footpath skirts the grounds. (Chris and Ann Chater, CLVP Evans)
  • It’s nearly 30 years since we last stayed at this hotel. Nick Fletcher-Brewer’s friendly voice and welcome are instantly recognisable. The views are stupendous, the bedroom tastefully refurbished, and the range and quality of food memorable.

  • Despite the end of season ambience, the welcome could not have been better. Tea and home-made cakes were served in front of a roaring fire in the comfortable lounge within minutes of our arrival; it took a lot of self-discipline for us to go for a walk afterwards. Dinner was of a high standard, and a full menu was offered though only two rooms were occupied. Our room was spacious and well appointed, with good views across Cardigan Bay. Nick and Louise were enthusiastic hosts
