The Wentworth

A stone's throw from the shingle beach in this musical town on the Suffolk coast, this traditional hotel has been owned by the Pritt family since 1920. Michael Pritt, who has been in charge since 1975, 'keeps a personal eye on what is happening and is usually around', say visitors. There has been much renovation: the reception area now has stylish new wallpaper and a hand-built desk; the conservatory lounge, which has new sofas and Lloyd Loom chairs, has been arranged to allow light meals to be taken. The seven bedrooms in Darfield House have been given light-oak fitted furniture; neutral colours; a modern bathroom. Binoculars are provided in those bedrooms in the main house which have sea views: 'Housekeeping was immaculate in our lovely spacious room,' 'It may have been modernised, but old-fashioned aspects remain,' is a comment. In the 'well-managed' dining room, there are mixed reports on the cooking of chef Tim Keeble. One visitor thought the food had improved, another was disappointed. Thr fresh fish is recommended.(Simon Rodway, Jennifer Davis)
  • Check-in smooth if impersonal. Bedroom decor a bit tired, but good lighting, plenty of coat hangers, free wi-fi, good-sized TV. Public areas well maintained. Food good but not outstanding. Good-value wine. Clean throughout, with cosy yet formal feel. Excellent staff, attentive and polite.

  • Comfortable public rooms, well-appointed single bedrooms, quiet and bright. Breakfast very good; good service. Dinner good but we thought the wine mark-up high. They are well attuned to the concerts.

  • A lovely, spacious room overlooking the sea. Housekeeping immaculate, staff very good. Restaurant better managed and the food greatly improved since our last stay.
