The Wentworth

'If you want a gentle, relaxed weekend far from the madness of modern life, this is the place,' say regular correspondents this year after a return visit to Michael Pritt's traditional hotel on the Norfolk coast. Another comment: 'It is a comfort zone for returning guests: nothing much changes.' Many of the bedrooms have views over the beach and sea (binoculars are provided); those in Darfield House, opposite, are spacious but have no sea view. 'Our spacious sea-view room was furnished in traditional style, with a touch of eccentricity (a large model elephant attached to a desk). From our window we watched the fish being landed.' One of the lounges has a log fire. Guests gather in the small bar for pre-dinner drinks ('an important ritual at the Wentworth'). The dining room is long and thin to maximise the sea views ('the paintings are less attractive'). Fish is a feature of chef Tim Keeble's menus, perhaps home-cured salmon and dill gravadlax; sea bream, Brancaster mussels, chilli and ginger chowder. A dissenter complained about the porridge at breakfast. (Mary Wilmer, CT Blackburn)

  • A welcoiming hotel. Michael Pritt keeps a personal eye on everything. The rooms have been modernised but some old-fashioned aspects remain. We had a large room facing the sea, which was relaxing and wonderful. The food was fresh and tasty and the dining room is attractive.

  • The grey brick exterior is rather forbidding, but once inside the red front door you are in a different world. As unhip as you could want, the hotel exudes comfort and cosseting. Quietly efficient Michael Pritt and his unchanging staff ensure guests want for nothing. The rear-facing rooms in the nain building are small. The rest are large to huge. All are well furnished; no little extra forgotten. Beds are new and comfortable. Baths are man-size, shower cubicles capacious. The only noise on Sunday morning was the bells of nearby Aldeburgh Church and an occasional seagull. In the dining area all tables have a sea view. Lunch and dinner are good, reasonably priced, not haute cuisine. The wine list is extensive but not cheap. Breakfast is part buffet, part service;you can eat more or less whatever you fancy. The bar is snug. The other public rooms are a wonderfully cosy bolt-hole. A place to treasure.

  • The welcome was fine, and the room was clean and well laid out, with a good-sized bathroom. At breakfast I didn't like the porridge, and the buffet had not much choice. When I fold the proprietor about my dissatisfaction, he was not very sympathetic.
