Rothay Manor

César award in 1992

'Standards are as high as ever: immaculate, beautifully furnished bedrooms and lounges; excellent food; a warm welcome.' In large, landscaped gardens, a short walk from Lake Windermere and the town centre, the Nixon family's 'comfortable', traditional hotel has been in every edition of the Guide. 'Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay,' said a returning guest this year, who visited with a varied cast of family members. The best bedrooms have a balcony with views towards Wansfell Pike. All have good storage; tea and coffee trays also have drinking chocolate and biscuits. ('Pity the bedside lights were too dim to read by.') The restaurant overlooking the gardens is newly refurbished; head chef Jane Binns's daily-changing menu might include rabbit, pistachio and whisky terrine; Cumbrian lamb shank, Colcannon potatoes, braised red cabbage. 'I liked the sensible policy of charging by the number of courses taken at dinner, which catered for my small appetite and the teenagers' enormous ones.' Breakfast has home-made preserves and 'secret recipe' muesli; hot dishes are cooked to order. (Margaret H Box, Jill and Mike Bennett)
  • Comfortable, in pleasant surroundings. Very good food. But its chief glory is the staff under the relaxed supervision of Nigel Nixon.

    Michael Barnett, 17/03/2012

  • Another delightful stay. Food as good as ever. Tea (it is renowned) in the garden on a f ine day is wonderfully relaxing. Breakfast sets you up for the day. The hotel caters for all ages, from tiny children to the decidedly aged. Disabled guests are unobtrusively looked after.

    Margaret Box, 10/08/2011
