Rothay Manor

César award in 1992

'The chief glory of Rothay Manor is the staff,' says a visitor in 2012 to the Nixon family's traditional hotel near the head of Lake Windermere. 'Under the relaxed supervision of the owner, Nigel Nixon, every one of them evinces a real pleasure in helping guests.' The cooking of the long-serving chef, Jane Binns, is also praised this year: 'The food is simply cooked but very attractively served: we particularly enjoyed plaice stuffed with salmon mousseline; guineafowl, lamb and mallard were also excellent.' The bedrooms are spacious: 'Our front-facing room, recently decorated, was a decent size and met all our needs.' 'Ours had a balcony on which I spent many happy hours reading.' The bar, lounge and main dining room are 'a pleasure to use'; afternoon tea, 'a favourite treat for families in the area, is wonderfully relaxing in the garden in fine weather'. Breakfast 'sets you up for the whole day'. Children are welcomed (they have their own menu in a family dining room). 'Disabled guests are well and unobtrusively looked after.' (Michael Barnett, Margaret Box, Anthony Bradbury)
  • Comfortable, in pleasant surroundings. Very good food. But its chief glory is the staff under the relaxed supervision of Nigel Nixon.

  • Another delightful stay. Food as good as ever. Tea (it is renowned) in the garden on a f ine day is wonderfully relaxing. Breakfast sets you up for the day. The hotel caters for all ages, from tiny children to the decidedly aged. Disabled guests are unobtrusively looked after.

    Margaret Box, 10/08/2011

  • We paid £765 for DBB for3 nights. The first-floor room, front facing with balcony, was very comfortable, a decent size, recently decorated. It met all our needs. The bar, lounge and main dining room are all as good as they ever were, a pleasure to use. The secondary dining room ,where we were placed on our third night with some other long-stayers, is a touch gloomy and has no atmosphere. Service was at all times helpful, quick and excellent.

    Anthony Bradbury, 25/06/2011
