Rothay Manor

César award in 1992

'I've never known it in better heart; as always very comfortable with admirable staff; the food is better than ever.' Praise comes this year from a regular visitor (and Guide reader) for the Nixon family's traditional hotel, which has earned an entry in every edition of the Guide. It has a 'delightful setting', in large gardens a short walk from the head of Lake Windermere. The bedrooms at the front have views across the gardens to Wansfell Pike; those at the back look out over the River Rothay. Superior rooms, many with a balcony, have a more modern decor; all are spacious with good storage. In the restaurant, which overlooks the gardens, long-standing head chef Jane Binns serves a daily-changing menu using locally sourced ingredients. Her dishes might include pan-fried chicken livers, Parmesan mash, red-onion gravy; venison braised with wild mushrooms, shallots, herbs, Coniston ale. Breakfast 'sets you up for the day'; juices, yogurts and cereals are on a buffet; hot food is cooked to order. Children are welcomed, and have their own menu in a family dining room. (John Borron)
  • Comfortable, in pleasant surroundings. Very good food. But its chief glory is the staff under the relaxed supervision of Nigel Nixon.

  • Another delightful stay. Food as good as ever. Tea (it is renowned) in the garden on a f ine day is wonderfully relaxing. Breakfast sets you up for the day. The hotel caters for all ages, from tiny children to the decidedly aged. Disabled guests are unobtrusively looked after.
