Loch Melfort Hotel

Sheltered by woodland on Asknish Bay, this country hotel is run by hands-on owners Calum and Rachel Ross. 'The position is superb; with a wonderful view of the loch, it is absolutely quiet,' says a visitor this year. 'A lovely hotel; the young and professional staff made us very welcome,' says another guest. There are two 'comfortable' lounges; 'a very pleasant barman'. Five bedrooms are in the main house; twenty, in a wood-framed extension, each have a private terrace or balcony. All rooms have the view. 'My attractive bedroom was well furnished; sheets and blankets were provided as I had requested; a good bathroom.' David Bell joined as chef in 2011. He serves modern Scottish dishes on a four-course menu. 'The food was very good: a fun amuse bouche; delicious soups; excellent fish; dainty puddings,' Informal meals are available in the Chartroom bistro next to gardens owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The 'excellent' breakfast has 'whole kippers, smoked haddock with a free-range egg'. There are moorings for yachts (showers available in the bistro). 'A relaxing break; good value.' (Moira Jarrett, Andrew Johnston)

  • A lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the food is excellent in both the dining room and bistro. The peace and quiet in this lovely location is the perfect chill out. They have Highland cattle, ducks and hens to keep little ones interested, and nice walks in the grounds.
