Loch Melfort Hotel

'A lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings,' says a visitor this year to Calum and Rachel Ross's country hotel on Asknish Bay. 'The staff are friendly and efficient; the quiet is the perfect chill-out; they have Highland cattle, ducks and hens to keep little ones interested; nice walks in the grounds.' Another comment (in 2012): 'A very good place in a peaceful setting.' The five bedrooms in the main house vary in size; 20 others are in a wood-framed extension (some noise) attached to the main house by a partly open walkway. These are spacious, 'well furnished and comfortable', and each has a private terrace or balcony. There are two 'comfortable' lounges; all rooms have 'wonderful' views. Guests again enjoyed the 'excellent cooking' of chef Peter Carr. His four-course menu of modern Scottish dishes in the dining room might include boudin of quail stuffed with Stornoway black pudding. Puddings are 'daintily served'. Informal meals are available in the Chartroom bistro next to Arduaine Garden, which is owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The 'excellent' breakfast has 'whole kippers, smoked haddock with a free-range egg'. (Marc Wall)

  • A peaceful setting. Lots to do in the area. Our light room had plenty of storage. Good-sized bthroom but feeble shower.

  • A lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the food is excellent in both the dining room and bistro. The peace and quiet in this lovely location is the perfect chill out. They have Highland cattle, ducks and hens to keep little ones interested, and nice walks in the grounds.
