The Traddock

In a charming village in the Yorkshire Dales, this 'lovely old manor house' is run as a small, 'friendly' hotel by the Reynolds family. 'Delightful: lots of welcoming public rooms with deep sofas to slump into,' says a returning visitor in 2012. 'The staff are efficient as well as friendly; the cooking is of a high standard.' The bedrooms are individually styled: 'Mine had attractive traditional furnishings, lots of character; nice touches like home-made shortbread, fruit and a Thermos of cold milk. The spotless bathroom had fluffy towels.' Four rooms have been refurbished this year. There are tables and chairs in the pretty garden. The chef, John Pratt, sources local produce for his modern British dishes (perhaps twice-baked soufflé of Whitby crab; slow-roasted shoulder of sucking pig). 'Very well cooked, using flavourful local produce; those with a big appetite won't be disappointed,' is one comment (a dissenter was less keen). The 'fantastic' breakfast has freshly baked bread, made-to-order smoothies; 'an enormous full English with lots of tastes and flavour'. Many visitors come for the excellent walking from the door (packed lunches are provided). (Jim Grover, and others)
  • Homely, family run, comfortable hotel with well-trained staff always pleasant and obliging. Room 7 seems to be the best. Lovely quiet village location. Good food.

  • Delightful. Lots of welcoming public room space. The staff are welcoming and efficient. The dinners were great. My room was sopotless, with lots of character. Big, confortable bed. Nice touches like fruit and biscuits and cold milk.
