Hartwell House

César award in 1997

'We were very impressed: the staff were courteous and always attentive; a great stay though you certainly pay for it.' Praise this year for this stately home in 'stunning' grounds, which is run by Richard Broyd's Historic House Hotels for the National Trust; Jonathan Thompson is the long-serving manager. The Grade I listed house was famously the residence in exile of Louis XVIII of France. 'We were blown away by the size of our royal four-poster room, larger than most of the public rooms. It had a beautiful, very large and comfortable bed, sofas, a dressing table; a well-appointed bathroom. We were surprised to read in the room notes that Louis's queen hated staying in it.' There are four 'sumptuous' drawing rooms with fine plasterwork, antiques and marble fireplaces. Most bedrooms and suites are in the main house, others are in a converted coach house or the Old Rectory. 'Pleasant' pre-dinner drinks and canapés in the lounge were enjoyed: 'Our smoked salmon starter was fine but the main courses were not exciting; coffee in the drawing room was lovely.' (Olivia Howes Smith, and others)
  • Perhaps the best of the National Trust hotels. Very comfortable bedrooms. Beds turned down at night and made during breakfast. Excellent food. Lovely swimming pool in spa, and good snack lunch.Beautiful grounds. Floppy toast at breakfast. Tea on arrival at £5 a head seemed excessive.

  • Terrific historic house and landscape. Very friendly service in contrast to some other grand hotels. But updating of bathrooms might be expected in a hotel of this standing. The Spa has a very handsome pool and it usually peaceful, but not as efficiently run or as welcoming as the hotel.
