The Cary Arms

In a dramatic setting below a steep cliff near Torquay, this small hotel has been given a modern make-over with a nautical theme by Lana de Savary. It is approached down a narrow, vertiginous road; the 'welcoming' young staff will unload luggage and drive visitors' cars to a private car park. The bar/dining area is a 'contemporary take on the original 19th-century inn': stone walls, wood and slate floor, wooden tables in alcoves; a conservatory dining area. In the restaurant, chef Ben Kingdon serves 'good gastropub food' using locally sourced fish and meat. His menus might include smoked mackerel, beetroot and horseradish relish; fillet of Devon beef, Parmentier potatoes and spring onions, shallot and red wine sauce. All the bedrooms face the sea; some have a private terrace or balcony. A large room with light panelled walls had 'a big, comfy bed; a good bathroom'. Breakfast is 'very good, wholesome but not over the top': on the bar a buffet with a fresh fruit, jugs of freshly squeezed juices, ham on the bone, smoked salmon. 'Good' cooked dishes brought to the table. (CJ, and others)
