Glenapp Castle

In 'delightful' gardens on high ground overlooking Ailsa Craig, this classic example of a 19th-century baronial castle is run as a luxurious hotel (Relais & Châteaux) by owners Graham and Fay Cowan. 'We were greeted by three staff members at the entrance,' says a visitor in 2012. 'Our luggage was taken to our room and everything was explained to us. The service was exemplary; friendly, no standing on ceremony.' Another comment: 'A perfect stay; the food was outstanding.' The castle has been furnished with fine paintings, Middle Eastern rugs, antiques. The library has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Guests have exclusive access to the gardens, which have a huge Victorian glasshouse, rare plants and shrubs, a walled garden and woodland walks. Adam Stokes, the 'innovative and confident' Michelin-starred chef, serves 'beautifully presented' dishes on a daily-changing menu which is 'interspersed with little tasters'. The large bedrooms have swagged curtains and wide bed. 'Our spacious ground-floor room (with access to the garden) had a seating area; a large bathroom had a claw-footed bath and separate shower. Tariffs are high but expectations were met.' (ST, and others)
  • Service is exemplary. Excellent welcome. The gardens are a delight. Our rooms were large, with a large bathroom. We appreciated the evening turndown. Dinner was very enjoyable. Dogs are accepted free of charge.
