The Mustard Seed at Echo Lodge

In 'joyful' gardens with trees, shrubs and an orchard, this Victorian lodge is run as a restaurant-with-rooms by owner Daniel Mullane. He has filled the former convent with objets d'art, prints and photographs from around the world. 'From the moment I arrived, his concern was that I should enjoy myself,' said the nominator. The decor is 'quirky and amusing': green walls in the living room (where guests are given tea and cake); blue in the restaurant. Angel Pirev is the new chef, serving a seasonal four-course menu with dishes like butternut squash, artichokes, and pistachio salad; seared duck breast, spring cabbage, fondant potato, pickled beetroot jus. Vegetables and soft fruit come from the kitchen garden, which has a greenhouse and polytunnel. The bedrooms are done in period style; they are well equipped, 'everything to hand', fresh flowers. You can wander around the gardens; or have a treatment from the resident Thai masseur. Many activities are close by: golf, horse riding, fishing and walking. More reports, please.
