'Ten out of ten,' is awarded by visitors this year to Kathleen O'Sullivan's white-painted extended Victorian building overlooking Bantry Bay. 'In every sense excellent. The room, cleanliness, staff and food were all of an exceptionally high standard.' The 'comfortable, well-run house' is packed with 'good-quality Victorian furniture and miscellany'. The bedrooms are in the main building and in an extension: all are large (the family rooms are vast), with 'ample storage' and modern bathroom. Front rooms overlook the bay, others face the 'meticulously tended' garden. Dinner is served in an 'attractive', light-filled conservatory restaurant, which is open to non-residents. The chef, Eleanor O'Donovan, serves country house dishes in 'generous portions'; her extensive menu might include Bantry Bay crab, West Cork lamb or locally caught fish; potatoes might be offered 'four ways (roast, boiled, mashed, chipped) in a single meal'. After-dinner drinks are taken in the lounge before an open fire, and tea is served in the garden in warm weather.
