Seaview House

'A well-run hotel in which we were made to feel very welcome.' Praise again this year for Kathleen O'Sullivan's extended, white, bay-windowed Victorian building in 'immaculate' gardens above Bantry Bay. 'She keeps a watchful eye on everything, telling us that we might not always see her, but she was never far away.' The public rooms and corridors are filled with good-quality Victorian furniture, a 'vast collection of paintings, ornaments and miscellaneous objects'. The bedrooms are in the old house and an extension. 'Our first-floor room in the extension had acres of space, a six-foot bed with blankets, ample storage; a modern bathroom. Housekeeping, which included turn-down, was meticulous.' No background music in the bar, just flowing conversation. The chef, Eleanor O'Donovan, serves country house dishes on an extensive dinner menu. 'It might not be cutting edge (quantities are generous), but we enjoyed excellent fish (cod, turbot, John Dory). Potatoes were served four ways at one meal; exceptional chips.' Breakfast has a large buffet; 'quality ingredients in the cooked dishes, delicious lamb's liver'. (Ann Walden)
