Seaview House

In large grounds above Bantry Bay, this extended, white, bay-windowed Victorian building was the family home of Kathleen O'Sullivan. 'Kindly and thoughtful', she has run it, in hands-on fashion, as a small hotel for more than 30 years. The atmosphere is traditional ('perhaps in a time warp,' said a visitor this year). There is a library with books in mahogany cases, and a lounge filled with antiques, flowers, a 'vast collection' of paintings, ornaments. Conversation not background music can be heard in the bar, which is often busy with locals. The chef, Eleanor O'Donovan, serves generous portions of country house dishes on an extensive menu in the conservatory restaurant. 'Our meal was good: decent home-made bread; rack of lamb cooked exactly as requested and served with a fine selection of vegetables. It was fair value, as was the wine list.' Bedrooms, which vary in size, are in the old house and in an extension. Those at the front of the house have sea views (through the mature trees in the grounds). A 'good' breakfast has a large buffet; interesting cooked dishes. (EC, and others)
  • Excellent in every sense. Room, cleanliness, staff and food all of an exceptionally high standard. Ten out of ten.
