Little Barwick House

César award in 2002

'As good as ever; it still sets the standard.' Praise from a visitor returning this year to Tim and Emma Ford's restaurant-with-rooms, a listed Georgian dower house close to the Somerset/Dorset border. 'The personable Emma' runs front-of-house with two long-serving assistants; her husband is the much-admired chef; their teenage sons (Ben and Olly) help in the kitchen. The 'welcoming and comfortable ambience and attentive service' are often praised. Arriving visitors are served tea and cake in a drawing room. In the restaurant, Mr Ford sources ingredients locally for his 'short but enticing' seasonal menu of 'well-presented' modern English dishes, which might include parsley and ham hock soup; roasted saddle of wild roe deer. Emma Ford has 'an excellent knowledge' of her wine list. The bedrooms vary in size (some are small). 'It's the touches that go to make the whole: complimentary mineral water; fresh milk with the tea and coffee; checking whether you prefer duvet or blankets on your bed; turn-down in the evening.' A 'first-class' breakfast has a wide choice of cooked dishes. (Mary Blaxall)
  • Emma and Tim Ford are hosts par excellence. Tim's cooking sets the standards for us. Locally sourced, well presented, not over-elaborate. Emma is an attentive front of house. A relaxing and enjoyable stat.
