Little Barwick House

César award in 2002

'Tim and Emma Ford are hosts par excellence' at their restaurant-with-rooms, a listed Georgian dower house close to the Somerset/Dorset border. 'Emma is welcoming and attentive; Tim's cooking sets the standard for us,' say regular visitors this year. 'It all contributes to a relaxing and enjoyable stay.' In the restaurant, ingredients are 'locally sourced, well presented but not over-elaborate; Tim's menus have some variation every day, which is much appreciated for a stay of a number of nights'. The Fords say they 'offer a true foodie experience, modern English, without froths, foams and excessive twiddliness'. Typical dishes: grilled Cornish red mullet, aubergine caviar; roasted breast of maize-fed guinea fowl, wild mushrooms, Madeira sauce. Emma Ford has an 'encyclopaedic' knowledge of the wine list; many wines are available by the glass aided by a new Verre de Vin preservation system which enables her to offer rare wines by the glass including Krug champagne. The individually furnished bedrooms have fresh flowers, flat-screen TV, radio, home-made shortbread, cafetière coffee/tea tray. There is a choice of blankets or duvet, and an evening turn-down service. 'Much to see and do in the area.' (Bryan and Mary Blaxall)
  • A beautiful old dowager's house, in a lovely Alice in Wonderland setting, with a charming, sloping grass lawn and garden, and the intermittent sounds of wood pigeons. A very relaxed and peaceful setting. From the first high tea we received on arrival, to the lean and cozy rooms, to the extraordinary gourmet meals, Little Barwick was an enchanting respite for us in our busy travels. Emma Ford, our hostess, was delightfully cheerful and accommodating to our every query and need, as her elusive husband Tim quietly labored away in the kitchen, concocting his wonderful meals. The living rooms were comfortable and inviting, and filled with books and guides to local and regional sites. We hope to return some day, but will not soon forget this lovely spot and it's felicitous and engaging Yhostess.

  • Another enjoyable stay. Tim Ford’s cooking continues to be of a high standard, with much local produce and some menu changes each night. Front-of-house is the efficient, ever-smiling Emma.
