BridgeHouse

'A very comfortable old inn', Mark and Joanna Donovan's small hotel stands by a bridge in this 'interesting' market town. The 13th-century building was once a priest's house; the public rooms in the oldest part of the building have thick walls, mullioned windows, inglenook fireplaces, oak beams; 'lots of books to browse'. The largest bedrooms are in the main house: the quietest face a large walled garden. Four smaller rooms and a family suite (children are welcomed) are in a converted coach house at the back. 'Our pleasant room was decorated in modern style; the bathroom was excellent,' said a visitor this year. In the Beaminster Brasserie, an elegant Georgian dining room (with an Adam fireplace), chef Stephen Pielesz cooks imaginative dishes, perhaps Jurassic Coast beef loin carpaccio with pickled beetroot; Lyme Bay brill, sea bass and scallop, sautéed potatoes and spinach. 'An excellent meal served by friendly, helpful staff.' Breakfast and light lunches are taken in a conservatory by the walled garden. Mapperton Gardens, close by, are worth a visit. • A comfortable inn. In low season we were graded to a lovely suite on the top floor. ALl bedrooms are decorated in modern style. each one different. Bathrooms very good. Public rooms had traditional features, log fires, lots of books. Staff friendly and helpful in the excellent restaurant.

  • We were disappointed to find that our room had a view over the car park, and a bathroom directly over the kitchen. We could hear the extractor fan and the noise from the kitchen - they were clearing up until well after midnight. The room was perfectly nice but overpriced. Comfy bed, lovely sheets, big bath towels. Breakfast had slow service but a wide choice of hot and cold dishes.
