Montagu Arms

'A beautiful old building in a lovely village', this brick-faced and wisteria-clad hotel is on the site of an 18th-century inn in the New Forest. Visitors this year praised the 'friendly' staff. 'We were addressed by name at all times and given a very personal service.' The much-extended building has oak-panelled public rooms with old brick fireplaces, 'comfy' armchairs and sofas; a conservatory faces the formal gardens. Bedrooms vary considerably in size and price; all are individually decorated in traditional style. 'Our superior room, which overlooked the garden, had a settee; it was if anything over-furnished for its size; less would have been more.' Matthew Tomkinson, the chef, uses local organic ingredients, many from the hotel's kitchen garden, for his dishes in the Michelin-starred Terrace restaurant. 'Perfectly cooked, with generous portions.' Typical dishes: white onion and Parmesan velouté; roast saddle of venison, parsnip purée, crispy venison croquette. Less formal meals can be taken in Monty's bar/brasserie. 'Excellent' breakfasts have home-made pastries; eggs, from the hotel's hens, were 'a joy to eat'. (Peter Anderson, Monty Knight-Olds)

  • Four wonderful nights. The barman and the head waiter always spoke to us by name, providing a very personal service. The ambience is just right for Christmas ,and the food was a pleasure to eat.The hotel has its own hens and the breakfast eggs were a joy to eat.

  • Beautiful old building well positioned in a lovely village. Friendly, welcoming staff. We were upgraded to a superior room overlooking the garden. It was OK but too small for the amount of furniture in it. Dinner was excellent in the Michelin-starred restaurant. I had grilled mackerel as a starter and venison as a main. My wife had rabbit cannelloni and duck. Perfectly cooked and generous portions. The poached pear dessert recommended was also excellent.
