Montagu Arms

'A most enjoyable stay; the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was excellent.' Praise in 2013 from regular Guide correspondents for this much-extended 17th-century country house, formerly an inn, in beautiful gardens in the New Forest national park. The wisteria-clad, brick-faced building is traditionally furnished, with wood-panelled public rooms; chintz armchairs, sofas and a log fire in the lounge. A wicker-furnished conservatory looks on to the gardens. Bedrooms, some of which overlook Beaulieu Palace, are individually decorated and vary in size. 'Our very comfortable room had its own sitting room.' Early morning tea or coffee can be delivered to the room. In the Michelin-starred Terrace restaurant, the chef, Matthew Tomkinson, uses local seasonal ingredients for his menus, in dishes like chilled fennel gazpacho, home-smoked organic salmon; roast fillet of beef, red chicory, sweet shallots and smoked bacon. Meals may be taken alfresco on the patio in fine weather. Simpler fare (eg, fish pie, steaks) is available in the less formal Monty's Inn. Guests can use the SenSpa at a sister hotel, Careys Manor, nearby. Montagu Arms is a member of Pride of Britain Hotels. (Mary and Bryan Blaxall, and others)

  • An impressive Georgian house in an attractive village. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The food was of a high standard with much care lavished on presentation. Service was good, though English was the second language for the largely French staff.

  • Four wonderful nights. The barman and the head waiter always spoke to us by name, providing a very personal service. The ambience is just right for Christmas ,and the food was a pleasure to eat.The hotel has its own hens and the breakfast eggs were a joy to eat.

  • Beautiful old building well positioned in a lovely village. Friendly, welcoming staff. We were upgraded to a superior room overlooking the garden. It was OK but too small for the amount of furniture in it. Dinner was excellent in the Michelin-starred restaurant. I had grilled mackerel as a starter and venison as a main. My wife had rabbit cannelloni and duck. Perfectly cooked and generous portions. The poached pear dessert recommended was also excellent.
