Burgh Island Hotel

César award in 2012

'Quirky, but magnificent when one gets with it,' says a visitor in 2012 to this Devon landmark, which has been restored to its 1930s glamour by owners Tony Orchard and Deborah Clark. 'It is an Art Deco tour de force, run with a proper sense of period fun,' was a reporter's comment. 'The spectacular island setting adds to the buzz.' The bedrooms are individually decorated and vary greatly. The largest suite has two bathrooms; a snug double has a slipper bath with uninterrupted view of sea and sky. The Beach House 'must be one of the most romantic rooms on the planet, with its stunning views'. The public rooms 'help you forget everyday life and drift back to a bygone era'. Guests are encouraged to dress for dinner (but black tie is not obligatory) in the candlelit dining room. Chef Timothy Hall's daily-changing menu of local ingredients might include Brixham fish soup; slow-roast beef fillet, Armagnac prune, Merlot reduction. 'When the jazz band strikes up in the ballroom, it's no surprise that everyone gets up to dance.' (Margaret West, Richard Axford)
  • Our second visit, and once again we stayed in the Beach House. This must be one of the most romayic rooms on the planet, with stunning views. The rest of the hotel helps you forget everyday life and drift gently back to a bygone era with staff that enhance this.

    Richard Axford, 03/03/2012
