Burgh Island Hotel

César award in 2012

'An experience like no other', this Grade II listed 1930s hotel is on a private island cut off by the tide twice a day. It has been restored as an 'Art Deco tour de force' by the owners Deborah Clark and Tony Orchard. 'It is quirky but magnificent; the house rules become part of the charm after you have been in residence for a couple of days,' says a visitor. A reporter who 'balked' at the black-tie dress code for dinner (encouraged but not obligatory) found it 'made perfect sense; it is run with a proper sense of period fun'. In the beamed, candlelit dining room, chef Tim Hall serves a daily-changing menu of modern dishes, perhaps Brixham crab, broad bean and citrus salad; chicken breast, sweetcorn panna cotta, spring greens, smoked almonds. The 1930s background music played in the beautiful public rooms 'seemed appropriate'. The bedrooms, named after famous guests (Noël Coward, Josephine Baker, Amy Johnson), vary greatly: the Garden Suite has a sitting room with French windows onto the garden; the Artist's Studio is in a room above the neighbouring Pilchard Inn. • It is the most romantic hotel. The rooms are great and the food is lovely. Staff are excellent, particularly the barman

  • Our second visit, and once again we stayed in the Beach House. This must be one of the most romayic rooms on the planet, with stunning views. The rest of the hotel helps you forget everyday life and drift gently back to a bygone era with staff that enhance this.
