Biggin Hall

Exceptional value (<£50)
In open countryside within the Peak District national park, James Moffett's Grade II* listed 17th-century building has long been liked by ramblers for its relaxed simplicity and 'amazingly good value'.  'Let's rejoice in the price and enjoy it for what it is,' says an enthusiast this year who will return. The 'attractive' stone building has mullioned windows, massive stone fireplaces: there are two sitting rooms and a library. 'The mealtime routine has been relaxed. Guests can have dinner between 6.30pm and 8pm. Guests tend to gather from 6.30 pm to give their orders from a 'well-designed and cooked' menu. The traditional dishes might include leek and potato soup; braised Derbyshire beef in red wine. 'A sideboard crowded with local cheeses was an unexpected bonus,' said a visitor in 2012. Breakfast, served between 8 and 9 am, is 'first rate', with a hot and cold buffet. The simple bedrooms are in the main house, the courtyard, the 'bothy' and the lodge. 'An excellent base for walks in the noble countryside of Dovedale.' Packed lunches are provided. (Michael and Patricia Blanchard, and others)
  • Real value for money. Enticing three-course dinner. Excellent cheeseboard. A fine small country hotel.

  • Brilliant place, meals very good, room comfortable, wouldn't hesitate in recommending Biggin Hall. BF
