Lower Brook House

In a Cotswold village once noted for its silk production, this converted 17th-century mill (Grade II listed) is approached through 'delightful' gardens. 'Full of character', it is run as a small hotel by owners Julian and Anna Ebbutt. 'A lot of thought' has been put into the well-being of guests, said an inspector who was 'enchanted' by candles lit in the windows ('the traditional sign of welcome rarely remembered these days'). The bedrooms, which vary in size, are decorated in 'plain, modern style'. Colebrook, a large double room, has a freestanding steel bath and separate shower in its bathroom. All rooms have fresh fruit, home-made biscuits, tea- and coffee-making facilities, a Thermos of fresh milk. There are flagstone floors and exposed beams in the two sitting areas, which have 'bold colours, a medley of personal objects'. A short supper menu, available from Monday to Saturday, can be taken in your room or in the small dining room. Anna Ebbutt is the cook: her traditional dishes might include confit of pork belly, herb and apple crust. Breakfast is 'very good'.
  • A pleasant stay in a delightful location; perfect for a country weekend away. We had a lovely long walk. In this charming village, a stream borders the garden of this lovely Cotswold house. The welcome was pleasant, with an offer of refreshment, a bag carried. WiFi available only in the cosy lounge with its open fire. In the dining room a high standard home cooking, satisfying and value for money, but the wine a bit pricey. No starters offered. A reasonable choice of main courses. The accommodation was restful, adequate: we had one of the cheaper, plainer rooms. Apples were provided, also very good home-made chocolate cake, bottled water, a hospitality tray. Beds (two pushed together) were comfortable, but short. Decoration quite bland, apart from a lively painting. The shower room was basic; hot water very slow. Another, pricier, room, Colebrook, was nicer, spacious, well equipped and well appointed. Breakfast was enjoyable, with freshly squeezed orange juice, the usual cooked options, beautifully done. The house is on the roadside, but there is little through traffic.
