The Millstream

On the road leading to the harbour in a historic West Sussex village, this converted manor house has a manicured garden with a millstream and gazebo. It has long been managed by Antony Wallace. Praise comes this year from an extended family: 'Our rooms were attractive, the food is good, and service continues to be excellent.' Another returning visitor was pleased to find 'an old friend as good as ever. In an understated way, it gets a lot of things right: a silent fridge with mineral water and fresh milk; a face flannel is a nice extra; pity about the captive coat-hangers.' Mr Wallace tells us that several more bedrooms have been renovated this year. A guest in a wheelchair was impressed by a fully equipped bedroom; a dissenter was less impressed with his ground-floor room. In the restaurant the chef, Neil Hiskey, serves a modern British menu with dishes like seared wild scallops, pea and mint salad; breast of guineafowl, white beans, shiitake mushrooms.' Marwick's, a 'more casual dining experience', opened in 2012. (Shirley King, Peter Jowitt, and others)
  • In a slightly understated way it gets many things right. Lots of thought put into guests' comfort in the bedrooms. Food not quite in the same league, perhaps the menus are too ambitious. It is nice to revisit an old frien and find it as good as before.

  • This is the second year we have taken our family here, six adults, two children and a baby, taking four bedrooms overlooking the garden. Rooms are attractive, food is very good and service continues to be excellent. The hotel is quiet, set in attractive gardens and very suitable for old and young.

  • A welcoming and comfortable hotel. Staff uniformly attentive and considerate. The rooms were well furbished, and had little, but important, extras such as a free daily paper, fresh milk in the fridge, fresh fruit etc. The restaurant was superb, with a large choice, of which 60% or so changed every day; the service was quiet, efficient and at the correct pace. The lounge area was very comfortable, delightfully furnished and equipped.
