The Millstream

'A welcoming, comfortable hotel, where the staff are uniformly attentive.' Praise in 2011 for this converted manor house near the harbour of this historic village. Returning visitors like 'the friendly atmosphere, the glass of wine when you check in'. Antony Wallace, the long-serving manager, tells us that renovation continues: 'A third of the bedrooms have been given a modern, understated style, with less pattern and clutter.' The rooms are 'well furnished', says a visitor. The 'little but important' extras are liked: 'a free daily paper, fresh milk in a fridge, fruit'. A wheelchair-bound guest was impressed by a fully equipped ground-floor bedroom, and 'consideration given to my disability, without intrusion'. There is a 'delightfully equipped' lounge area. The restaurant, which overlooks the garden, is 'superb: a large daily-changing choice; service well paced'. The chef, Neil Hiskey, has a modern style, eg, smoked haddock and leek open ravioli; fillet of beef, wild mushroom sauce, truffle potato purée. Early suppers are provided for guests attending the Chichester theatre. 'Lunch was enjoyable'; breakfast is 'hearty'. (Jonathan Dare, Brian and Gwen Thomas, Bob Potter)

  • In a slightly understated way it gets many things right. Lots of thought put into guests' comfort in the bedrooms. Food not quite in the same league, perhaps the menus are too ambitious. It is nice to revisit an old frien and find it as good as before.

  • This is the second year we have taken our family here, six adults, two children and a baby, taking four bedrooms overlooking the garden. Rooms are attractive, food is very good and service continues to be excellent. The hotel is quiet, set in attractive gardens and very suitable for old and young.

  • A welcoming and comfortable hotel. Staff uniformly attentive and considerate. The rooms were well furbished, and had little, but important, extras such as a free daily paper, fresh milk in the fridge, fresh fruit etc. The restaurant was superb, with a large choice, of which 60% or so changed every day; the service was quiet, efficient and at the correct pace. The lounge area was very comfortable, delightfully furnished and equipped.
