The Horse and Groom

César award in 2012

Found 'excellent on all counts' by a visitor, this former coaching inn is run as a pub-with-rooms by brothers Tom and Will Greenstock. Other praise (in 2012): 'We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would certainly go again.' The honey-coloured building has an open-plan bar and restaurant. Guests order from Will Greenstock's blackboard menu in the bar: 'We enjoyed spicy soup, excellent pork, and real vegetables in a separate dish; red cabbage just as it should be.' Vegetables come from the pub's garden, other produce from local farms. The bedrooms are spacious: 'Mine had a mirrored chest of drawers, and was twice the size you would expect in a pub,' said a reporter. 'Our recently decorated room was spacious and comfortable, with a large bathroom.' The A44 runs by the pub, but is quieter at night ('heavy curtains provided good soundproofing'). The 'first-rate' breakfast has milk and butter from a local farm ('where all the cows have a name'). 'The home-made croissants were a delight, warm, buttery, flaky.' Check-in is before 3 pm or after 6 pm. (Michael Mackenzie, Jill and Mike Bennett)
  • A return visit. Just as delightful. Warm, friendly welcome; feeling of a well-organised establishment where everyone knows their job and gets on with it, cheerfully. Our room overlooking the garden was comfortable and well equipped. At dinner, asparagus and aubergine purée were delicious, steak was excellent, and there were real, fresh vegetables. Breakfast had eggs with strong yellow yolks, and real home-made croissants.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We arrived to a friendly welcome shortly before 3pm (you cannot check in between 3 and 6).Our deluxe double room was spacious and comfortable, with a large bathroom. Traffic was audible by day but no problem at night. Dinner included excellent pork and steak with 'real' vegetables. Breakfast had 'special' milk from a local farm, generous butter slabs, wonderful croissants; no portion control.

  • Excellent on all counts. Well-appointed bedroom and bathroom with good sound proofing against A44 traffic (heavy curtains). First-rate breakfast. Excellent lunch. Efficient, welcoming staff. Good value for money.
