The Horse and Groom

César award in 2012

'Delightful, warm, welcoming; you get the feeling of being in a well-organised establishment where everyone knows their job and gets on with it cheerfully.' Praise in 2013 from visitors returning to Tom and Will Greenstock's former coaching inn in a Cotswold village of honey-stone houses. Tom is 'much in evidence' front-of-house; his brother, Will, is the chef whose blackboard menu is 'tweaked regularly'. 'Evesham asparagus was served with shrimps one evening, bacon another; chicken breast with roast sweet potato one day, aubergine purée the next (each so different and delicious).' The bedrooms are 'spacious and have all the essentials'. A room overlooking the garden had a 'good bed, very nice bathroom; June's scrummy home-made flapjacks and a Thermos of fresh milk with the tea tray. June also makes the pièce de résistance at breakfast: gorgeous, buttery croissants.' There is no lounge: 'It's the bar or bedroom, but you can sit comfortably and read in all the bedrooms.' Some road noise during the day from the busy A44; quieter at night ('heavy curtains provided soundproofing'). (Jill and Mike Bennett)
  • It never disappoints. Tom Greenstock and his team worked tirelessly to ensure our stay was as near perfect as possible. The food is of a consistently high standard with an imaginative menu without pretention and a commitment to use locally sourced ingredients. The bedroom was spacious, the bed extremely comfortable, and small touches like the complimentary homemade flapjack and fresh milk such a contrast to standard hotel offerings. Above all is the sincere welcome from Tom who remembers us by name and goes out of his way to enquire after us without being intrusive.

  • A return visit. Just as delightful. Warm, friendly welcome; feeling of a well-organised establishment where everyone knows their job and gets on with it, cheerfully. Our room overlooking the garden was comfortable and well equipped. At dinner, asparagus and aubergine purée were delicious, steak was excellent, and there were real, fresh vegetables. Breakfast had eggs with strong yellow yolks, and real home-made croissants.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We arrived to a friendly welcome shortly before 3pm (you cannot check in between 3 and 6).Our deluxe double room was spacious and comfortable, with a large bathroom. Traffic was audible by day but no problem at night. Dinner included excellent pork and steak with 'real' vegetables. Breakfast had 'special' milk from a local farm, generous butter slabs, wonderful croissants; no portion control.
