Lindeth Fell

César award in 2009

'That comfortable feeling of being at home remains; you know that the guest comes first.' Praise in 2012 comes again from returning visitors to this traditional hotel owned and run in personal style by Diana Kennedy and her daughter, Sheena. The long-serving manager, Linda Hartill, has retired: 'Mrs Kennedy is still much in evidence talking to guests every evening, and Sheena is now the very efficient manager.' Another comment: 'The furnishings might take you back in time; a reminder of what to like about an era of old-fashioned personal service; you are well looked after.' Julian Ankers, the new chef, 'has introduced interesting dishes, nicely presented; guineafowl was very good as were the venison and lamb'. The bedrooms, all of which have been refurbished, are 'beautifully furnished, clean and welcoming; beds are supportive, thank goodness'. 'Our superior room was modestly sized, and well appointed, with a modern, elegant, bathroom.' Many have views of the lake; Lindeth Fell stands in large grounds with award-winning gardens, on the hills above Windermere. (Jill and Mike Bennett, Alan and Edwina Williams, TGR, Ian and Francine Walsh)
  • It is one of the rare places where one feels totally relaxed, and where customers are really valued as individuals, always addressed by their correct surname. Sheena, one of the Kennedy daughters, is now the manager, and does this with great charm and efficiency. The remarkable Mrs Kennedy is often in in the kitchen to cook some of her personal traditional pudding recipes. The cuisine had improved since our last visit: the food was good modern British cooking in portions copious enough to satisfy a fell walker. The tables are elegantly laid; service is very pleasant, by well-trained staff. Bedrooms are comfortable and immaculate. They are modernising the bathrooms. The gardener keeps the grounds well cared for.

  • Comfortable feeling of being at home. Rooms beautifully furnished, clean and welcoming. Mrs Kennedy much in evidence, daughter Sheena the efficient manager. cooking has gone up a notch. interesting dishes, nicely presented, butvegetables not so imaginative.

  • Our first visit to this hotel. It was warm and welcoming, beautifully decorated for Christmas. Our superior room was modestly-sized but finely furnished and well appointed, with a modern, elegant bathroom. We were in a group of six for dinner, and everyone had high praise for the food. Breakfasts also were appetising.
