Linthwaite Country House Hotel

In 'lovely' gardens overlooking Lake Windermere, this luxury hotel with 'friendly service and a delightful ambience' is owned by Mike Bevans; the manager is Andrew Nicholson. Visitors to the timbered, creeper-covered, white and stone house write of a 'warm welcome'. Standard bedrooms overlook the gardens or a courtyard at the back. Many of the larger rooms have views of the lake. Each of five rooms in an extension has a private terrace; the Loft Suite has a separate lounge, a retractable glass roof panel (which closes automatically if it rains), a telescope, a state-of-the-art sound system. The cream-painted lounge has an Edwardian feel: a wooden floor, country prints on the walls, lots of seating, a large fireplace and an enclosed veranda facing the lake. The chef, Richard Kearsley, serves modern dishes, perhaps loin of Cartmel valley venison, caramelised red onion tart, port and chocolate jus. A three-course lunch was 'beautifully presented'. Breakfast has a wide selection of cereals and fruit; home-made pancakes or full English. There is good walking from the door; a tarn in the grounds. (Susan Morgan, Michael and Jean Clunas)

Linthwaite House Hotel - Luxury Lake District Hotel

  • Hotel was excellent. Lovely staff and attention to detail

    Sue Tunstall, 24/10/2011

  • We went for a family lunch of eight, and spent a very happy five hours. The warm welcome when we arrived set the scene for our short stay. The delicious three-course lunch at £20 a head was beautifully presented. The dining chairs were particularly comfortable. All of the staff were polite and knew their job. Afternoon tea had tasty home-made biscuits. What a joy.
