'Going to Farlam Hall is like stepping back into the heyday of country house hospitality.' Continuing praise this year for this traditional, ivy-covered country hotel (Relais & Châteaux), which has been owned and run by the Quinion family for 40 years. 'We had a warm and attentive welcome from Helen Quinion. At dinner, staff were proactive and engaged,' said a trusted correspondent. 'The consistent high quality of the service and the food make this a very special place,' is another comment from a returning guest. 'Attention to detail is evident: a comfortable bed with crisp linens; good bathrobes; fluffy towels on a heated towel rail.' In the 'elegant' dining room, Barry Quinion's food is 'imaginative but unfussy, with sprightly variations', perhaps loin of Cumbrian lamb, roasted parsnip purée, ratatouille. 'The satisfied buzz in the restaurant says it all.' 'Excellent breakfasts have lots of choice: fresh and stewed fruit, eggs in all possible ways, toast with good marmalade and plum jam, strong coffee.'   • We were upgraded to Room 5. It was a double-aspect room; one window was blocked by a tree; the other looked out on to beautiful lawns on which croquet was set out, and magnificent mature trees. The bedroom was very floral. The fairly small bed was obviously not the correct one for the room, as the fitted headboard was much bigger. There was a beautiful piece of Victorian furniture which acted as a dressing table. In one of three sitting rooms we had pre-dinner drinks. The waitresses wore long black gowns. Very unusual and very striking. The dining room was just as striking, decorated in dark blues and gold. The tables were formally set with white tablecloths, and the lighting was atmospheric. Breakfast was waitress service, no buffet, but the best ever marmalade.

  • Going to Farlam Hall is like stepping back into the heyday of country house hospitality. A warm welcome is given by Helen Quinion, followed by considerate service by retainers who obviously have been there a long time. The décor is typically Victorian and could do with a little refreshing. Ours was their largest room, and whilst rain pelted and wind raged outside, it felt beautifully warm and pleasant. The beds were probably the most comfortable we have ever slept in. The bathroom was cosy, well lit, and provided for every need. It was a joy to dine off beautiful china and eat with elegant silverware on an immaculately pressed tablecloth. We were the only diners on our first night, and the food prepared just for us was delicious. The following evening there were two large parties dining, with long tables, beautifully laid, making the place look very festive. The meal was just as good the second evening and additional lady helpers, served attentively. When we asked for breakfast a little earlier than stipulated, this was provided the minute we came down. The hospitality cannot be faulted but it comes at a price. It certainly makes one nostalgic for a more gracious era.

  • A delightful hotel where attention to detail is evident. Quinion family welcome could not have been warmer. Comfortable beds with crisp linen; fluffy towels, good bathrobes, heated towel rail, hot, hot water in large bathrooms. Barry's food is imaginative but unfussy, with meat and much produce locally sourced. Short daily-changing menu enables sprightly variation. The satisfied buzz in the restaurant says it all. The hotel was full but service smiling and impeccable, with time taken to talk and to advise on walks locally. Off the beaten track but perfectly possible for the car-less (like us): hotel will book local taxi firm. Conversations with local people revealed how well-regarded the restaurant is in the area.
