Farlam Hall

César award in 2001

'The courtesy of the owners and the helpfulness of the staff is outstanding,' says a visitor this year to the Quinion family's traditional country hotel (Relais & Châteaux). The former Borders manor house stands sheltered by tall trees in an 'immaculate' landscaped garden. Its ornamental lake has an 'entrancing' fountain. There are open fires in the ornate public rooms, which have patterned wallpaper, lots of knick-knacks and Victoriana. Bedrooms, priced according to size, are liked: 'Ours couldn't have been more comfortable,' is a typical comment. In the evening, 'smart dress is preferred': drinks and canapés are served before dinner in the two drawing rooms. The huge dining room has floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the garden. The chef, Barry Quinion, serves a short daily-changing menu of 'imaginative dishes with unusual combinations', perhaps terrine of partridge, herb and pistachio; breast of guineafowl, ginger risotto, plum and orange sauce. The 'lovely' breakfast had 'proper toast and conserves; beautifully cooked scrambled egg; tender sweet bacon'. Hadrian's Wall and the M6 are within easy reach. (Dr Gillian Todd)

  • It is pleaasant to arrive up the sweeping driveway. The welcome was good. Our rooms were large and well appointed. Decent-sized bathroom. Two comfy lounges; relaxing atmosphere. Service was good. The gardens are worth exploring. The Quinion family have owned and run the hotel since 1975 and their dedication shows. Owner-managed hotels have something that management-run hotels do not.

  • Superb food and service. The evening menu during our stays was imaginative, with unusual combinations. The courtesy of the owners and the helpfulness of all the staff is outstanding.
