César award in 2011

'Rare perfection was delivered at this charming country house.' High praise this year from Guide readers for this 'comfy and welcoming hotel', owned and managed by Annabel and Stephen Thomas. In a peaceful village location by a bubbling stream on the edge of the Brechfa forest, the 16th-century building has thick exposed stone walls, old fireplaces and beams. Rooms are 'comfortable', with simple pine furnishings. 'Ours was vast, with an extended sitting area, huge sofa, coffee table, large flat-screen TV.' Stephen Thomas cooks a daily-changing menu of seasonal dishes using local ingredients. 'We were particularly impressed with the interesting canapés: three different varieties each evening. We enjoyed a shellfish soup of intense flavour, beef stroganoff that melted in the mouth and an orange and pomegranate panna cotta'. Annabel Thomas is responsible for the often-praised puddings. The cooked breakfast has 'good sausages and home-made bread', free-range eggs; honey and preserves come from a nearby farm. 'Excellent value for money'. • Comfortable room. Daily-changing menu of excellent food. Outstanding value. Welcoming hosts and friendly atmosphere.

  • We were greeted warmly. Our room was spacious and comfortable. We chose our dinner over a drink in the very pleasant bar. The food was excellent, served without delays. After our first meal we asked if the vegetables could be cooked a little more – and they were. Breakfast was a feast, cooked to order. And the price was reasonable.

  • Rare perfection was delivered at this charming country house. Annabel Viney's management and Steve's outstanding cooking have earned a worthy reputation. Our room was vast: everyething had been thought of. Tea was served in arrival. The bar was well stocked. Service at dinner was immaculate. Breakfast did not quite live up to the rest.
