'Outstanding value with welcoming hosts and a friendly atmosphere.' On the edge of the Brechfa forest, Annabel and Stephen Thomas's 'comfortable' 16th-century country house is surrounded by a large garden - populated by finches, robins and woodpeckers. 'On arrival, we were greeted by Annabel Thomas and offered tea in the pleasant garden, before being shown to our room.' Bedrooms, simply decorated with pine furniture, have dressing gowns and tea- and coffee-making facilities. 'Our spacious room had a huge bed; plenty of hot water in the shower.' At dinner, Stephen Thomas cooks a daily-changing menu of 'excellent' food using Welsh produce; the organic lamb and Welsh Black beef are from a farm two miles away. 'We chose our dinner over a drink in the very pleasant bar. After our first meal, we asked if our vegetables could be cooked a little more in future - and they were. A help-yourself breakfast bar has fresh fruit salad and organic Welsh yogurt; cooked dishes include free-range eggs, local bacon and home-made bread. 'Breakfast was a feast.' • Very hopsitable, dog friendly and super local food.

  • Our second stay at this charming hotel. The experience was just as enjoyable. High standards have been maintained in all areas. Steve produced a good choice of outstanding food, cleverly enhancing the flavours of high-quality local produce. Most important was the personal but not intrusive attention of the owners during a seven-day stay.

  • We were greeted warmly. Our room was spacious and comfortable. We chose our dinner over a drink in the very pleasant bar. The food was excellent, served without delays. After our first meal we asked if the vegetables could be cooked a little more – and they were. Breakfast was a feast, cooked to order. And the price was reasonable.
