Tigh an Dochais

Exceptional value (<£50)
'Recommended without hesitation' this year by a three-time visitor, this striking contemporary house was designed by award-winning architects to make the most of the views across Broadford Bay. The owners, Neil Hope and Lesley Unwin, are 'delightful hosts, offering tea and coffee and shortbread on arrival, and serving delicious breakfasts and evening meals'. The house is entered by a bridge to the upper floor: the guest lounge has a wood-burning stove, shelves crammed with books, comfortable seating. The ground-floor bedrooms 'are spacious and well equipped, and have fantastic views across the bay'. The house is within walking distance of pubs and restaurants. Mr Hope will cook an evening meal, which must be booked in advance, when a menu can be tailored to tastes. It might include langoustine bisque; artisan cheeses and an individual baked fruit sponge. Breakfast, taken communally in the lounge, has a buffet of fruits, cereals, home-made bread and preserves, and smoked salmon; dishes cooked to order include haddock and kipper 'smoked by Ian'. Afterwards, 'walk straight on to the beach (when the tide is out)'. (Michael Fraser)
  • Excellent, unpretentious B&B that lives fully up to the description in thee GHG. Plus points: very clean, and 'dogs not allowed'; wonderful views through the huge plate-glass windows in both lounge and bedrooms; friendly, helpful owner; comfortable beds in good-sized and well-equipped bedrooms; good breakfasts and excellent evening meal (good value for £25).Disadvantages: shared table for breakfast could be unwelcome (but for us it was a bonus due to interesting other guests); owner not able to prepare evening meal every day
