Kilmichael Country House

Thought to be the oldest house on Arran, this white-painted 17th-century mansion stands in wooded grounds with fine views of Goat Fell, the island's highest peak. It retains the atmosphere of a private house: the owners, Geoffrey Botterill and Antony Butterworth, treat visitors as 'personal guests'. They have filled the house with furniture and pictures collected on their travels. The two 'spacious, properly lit' first-floor lounges are 'good places in which to relax'; the Yellow Drawing Room has a Broadwood piano for guests to play. Five bedrooms are in the main house (one has a four-poster and a bath 'big enough for two'). Three are in neighbouring converted stables. 'Our lovely room had lots of thoughtful touches: a bone china tea set, OS map.' In the conservatory dining room, Antony Butterworth's four-course menu changes daily (no choice, preferences discussed). Typical dishes: leek, pea and asparagus tartlet; breast of pheasant en papillote, rosemary and redcurrant sauce, apples in calvados. Guests praise the flexibility shown to those with special dietary needs. 'Gluten-free bread was baked specially.' The garden is patrolled by peacocks and ducks. (PS, and others)
  • Delightful stay, warm welcolme, extremely well appointed hotel. Beautiful gardens - peacocks made some substantial deposits on car but no lasting damage! Dinner - fixed-price menu - alternatives by request - no a la carte - slightly too much food for wrinklies.
