The Trout at Tadpole Bridge

On the banks of the River Thames, this 'atmospheric and attractive' pub/restaurant-with-rooms is owned by Gareth and Helen Pugh. The 'unpretentious' 17th-century stone inn has an informal atmosphere and an 'unfussy' decor. The flagstoned bar, with cask ales, log fires and a new all-day tapas menu, is popular with locals (who are 'positively' encouraged). Children are welcomed with toys and games; the large garden that runs down to the river provides much outdoor space in which to explore. Well-equipped bedrooms at the back of the inn are individually designed; one has a claw-footed bath, another a sleigh bed; all were being refurbished as the Guide went to press. The information pack in the rooms 'shows much thought'. In the restaurant, chef Pascal Clavaud's modern dishes might include goat's cheese panna cotta, poached pear, beetroot; roast sucking pig, sweet potato Parmentier, garlic spinach. Breakfast has local sausages, home-baked bread and home-made marmalade. Dogs are welcomed. The Thames Path next to the inn leads through the wild flower meadows of the Chimney Meadows nature reserve. Popular with boating visitors; there are moorings for patrons.

  • The unflappable Helen Pugh is the heart and soul of the Trout. High marks all round, especially the food. the house is simply and thoughtfully decorated throughout. A warm welcome in a quiet rural setting.

  • A very enjoyable stay. The walcome was warm. The staff were helpful. Much thought had gone into the design of our room, making it one of the best pub bedrooms we have stayed in. Dinner very acceptable, breakfast as good.
