The Trout at Tadpole Bridge

Endorsed again this year, Gareth and Helen Pugh's 17th-century stone pub/restaurant has an idyllic position by a narrow bridge over the River Thames. 'It is a simple, unpretentious place with a high standard of comfort and a charming staff,' says a visitor in 2011. The bar and eating areas have a 'warm' feel: part-timbered walls, original fireplaces, interesting pictures. Helen Pugh runs the front-of-house, taking orders for dinner from Pascal Clavaud's seasonal menu (with blackboard specials). He serves classic dishes, perhaps red mullet, coriander and lemon couscous. 'The cooking is outstanding; interesting combinations are beautifully presented,' is another comment. The bedrooms are individually styled: 'Our attractive room was decorated in olive, grey and ochre; it had a huge sleigh bed, antique dressing table.' Two bathrooms have been renovated this year. The 'excellent' breakfast has freshly squeezed orange juice, fruit compote, home-baked bread and home-made preserves; cooked choices include kippers and haddock.' Children are welcomed. Check in before 3 pm or after 6 pm. (Peter Adam, Virginia Lynch)

  • A very enjoyable stay. The walcome was warm. The staff were helpful. Much thought had gone into the design of our room, making it one of the best pub bedrooms we have stayed in. Dinner very acceptable, breakfast as good.

  • Information pack refreshingly different. Welcome to dogs unique. Bedroom, restausrant and gardens immaculate. Staff unfailingly efficient. Food imaginative and cooked to a high standard.
