The Trout at Tadpole Bridge

'The staff are welcoming and the food is great,' says a visitor this year to Gareth and Helen Pugh's 'warm and friendly' 17th-century pub/restaurant beside a narrow bridge over the River Thames. The bar and eating areas, which have part-timbered walls and original fireplaces, are popular with locals. Mrs Pugh runs front-of-house 'with charm', and takes orders for dinner; Pascal Clavaud is the chef. 'His interesting menu is supplemented by a good specials board: we had bubble and squeak with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce, roast pheasant with caramelised pears.' The bedrooms are individually decorated in contemporary style: 'A lot of thought had gone into our room's design to ensure it provided comfort and functionality; a king-size bed, a well-lit dressing table, large wardrobe, cafetière and fresh milk, magazines; good-quality fittings and towels in the bathroom.' Breakfast 'is as good as dinner', with a selection of cooked dishes including fish, and a basket with croissants and toast'. Children and dogs are welcomed. 'Pretty good value.' (Mrs EM Anderson, Ken and Priscilla Wilmslow, Peter Adam)

  • A very enjoyable stay. The walcome was warm. The staff were helpful. Much thought had gone into the design of our room, making it one of the best pub bedrooms we have stayed in. Dinner very acceptable, breakfast as good.

  • Information pack refreshingly different. Welcome to dogs unique. Bedroom, restausrant and gardens immaculate. Staff unfailingly efficient. Food imaginative and cooked to a high standard.
