The Trout at Tadpole Bridge

Beside a narrow bridge over the River Thames, Gareth and Helen Pugh's 'unpretentious' 17th-century pub/restaurant is liked for the 'great' food and 'friendly' staff. It is popular with locals and boating visitors; six moorings are free if you dine in the restaurant. The atmosphere is informal and the decor 'unfussy': contemporary colour schemes combined with traditional materials. The Pughs, who have two young sons, welcome visiting children with toys and games. Young Charlie Pugh (who likes plain and simple cooking) helped design a children's menu (dishes like sausages and mash, onion gravy). His brother, Alexander ('bon viveur in the making'), suggested 'we offer smaller portions of most things including mussels'. Chef Pascal Clavaud prepares modern dishes, perhaps trio of Kelmscott pork, parsnip dauphinoise, curly kale. The bedrooms are 'thoughtfully' decorated and equipped. A reader who enjoyed the cooking this year thought his room looked 'tired'; other visitors thought their room was 'the best pub accommodation we have stayed in'. Breakfast has home-made bread, a well-stocked sideboard and interesting cooked choices. (K and PW, and others)

  • A very enjoyable stay. The walcome was warm. The staff were helpful. Much thought had gone into the design of our room, making it one of the best pub bedrooms we have stayed in. Dinner very acceptable, breakfast as good.

  • Information pack refreshingly different. Welcome to dogs unique. Bedroom, restausrant and gardens immaculate. Staff unfailingly efficient. Food imaginative and cooked to a high standard.

  • Two very pleasant nights. Room fine, service delightful, food very good indeed. Pretty good value.
