The Hoste

In the centre of a lovely village with a plethora of upmarket shops, this 350-year-old inn returns to the Guide under new ownership: Brendan and Bee Hopkins have commissioned much renovation. Iris Rillaerts has joined as manager. 'It is a well-run hotel, with helpful staff and excellent food,' say inspectors. The bar is a popular local watering hole; there is good artwork in the panelled dining room where 'service was especially good'. The chef, Gemma Arnold, cooks an extensive menu of modern dishes: 'The fish was excellent: a fine seafood chowder; Thai-crusted halibut with oriental noodles was delicious.' The bedrooms are in the main building, a courtyard wing, Vine House across the green, and Railway House ten minutes' walk away. A courtyard room had 'silver furnishings, silvery wallpaper, floor-to-ceiling curtains with tassels and pelmets: slightly over the top but the essentials were right. A large comfortable bed, quality bedlinen, excellent lighting, a decent bathroom.' Breakfast 'was above average: a wonderful buffet table (constantly replenished) had jugs of freshly squeezed juice, interesting cereals, two fruit purées; exceptionally good sausages'.

  • A well-managed hotel. Very good welcome, helpful staff, excellent food and facilities, but not cheap. Our room was spacious and well equipped, decor a bit OTT, but the essentials were right, good reading lights, large, comfortable bed, decent-sized bathroom. At dinner, fish was especially good. Breakfast also above average.

  • A good place in itself and also for visiting nearby coastal sites and villages. Standards maintained. Food still excellent. Good snack lunch in conservataory. Rooms all diffferent; no noise probem with those that overlook the street: one feels part of the village. Many pictures for sale.
