'A delightful experience,' say visitors this year to Jean-Pierre Mifsud's 'near-perfect' 18th-century former manor house in the north Devon countryside. In a 'beautiful setting with extensive views over the Taw valley', the house is approached by a meandering, deeply wooded driveway. Beyond a spacious hall are a drawing room and a sitting room with a bay window; there are log fires, oriental rugs and large murals. Bedrooms (five have been added this year) come with 'many complimentary extras, such as a minibar with soft drinks, fresh milk in the fridge, a cafetière on the tray, free Wi-Fi and daily newspaper. Our bathroom was modern, with top-quality fittings.' In the elegant restaurant, chef Richie Herkes cooks a modern menu of dishes like oak-smoked salmon with Cornish crab cakes; breast of duckling, gratin potatoes, honey-roasted parsnips, venison gravy. A five-course gourmet menu, to be taken by the whole table, is available. Cooked dishes at breakfast (no buffet) are 'fresh and excellent'.
