Yeoldon House

'A vista of gardens and a fine view of the River Torridge' greets visitors to Jennifer and Brian Steele's 18th-century gabled house which they run as a small country hotel. The decor is traditional: suitcases on the stairs, old stained glass, lots of artefacts, 'a bit over-decorated with knick-knacks'. The bedrooms vary in size and style: 'Ours, Kingsley, was a beautiful square space; windows on two sides; glistening linen, an antique dressing table. A balcony opened to a river view. The lighting was good; the small bathroom lacked storage space. We liked the personal letter of welcome.' The Steeles tell us there is now a new bathroom with lots of storage space. Brian Steele's cooking is 'the important strength' in the river-facing restaurant, Soyer's, which is 'deservedly popular with locals'. His short menus have 'exquisitely cooked local fare (sea bass, pork belly, rack of lamb) served with old-world courtesy'. Typical dishes: ham hock, mustard and parsley terrine, apple and cider brandy chutney; chump of West Country lamb, parsnip and horseradish mash. Breakfast is 'equally sumptuous: local sausage, black pudding and so much else'. The North Devon Coastal Path passes the house. (Canon Michael Bourdeaux, and others)
  • A superb hotel The decor on the stairs and landing looks like something out of an Agatha Christie novel but don't be fooled, this is a class act. Our room was the Crow's Nest at the top of a long flight of stairs with it's own balcony and a glorious view over the Torridge estuary. Although not big, the room was extremely comfortable. The food was faultless. the tenderest duck breast I have ever tasted. There were plenty of vegetables, an area I find often neglected by hotels. Breakfast was good too, good fruit salad and excellent pancakes.

  • Fine location. Warm welcome. Our spacious room was beautiful; its balcony had a river view; the lighting was good. Bathroom a little small with not enough shelf space. Dinner was a sumptuous spread; generous breakfast too. With the GHG voucher it was wonderful value.
