San Domenico House

The Italian ownership is evident at Marisa Melpignano's small hotel spread over two Victorian red brick houses west of Sloane Square. She has furnished it in opulent style, with plush fabrics, paintings and antiques. The staff are from all parts of Europe. 'It has a most pleasing and relaxing ambience, and an emphasis on comfort and service,' says a Guide inspector this year, upgrading San Domenico to a full entry. 'My large rectangular bedroom was red: carpets, full-length curtains, tablecloths, and patterned light shades all shared this harmonising feature. It had an oriental theme with beautiful antique furniture - a carved bedhead, a painted chest of drawers, a mirror with a gilded frame. The pillows on the king-size bed were soft and comfortable; a well-lit bathroom.' Gallery bedrooms have a mezzanine sitting area which looks down on a silk-canopied bed. There is no restaurant; a room-service menu is available. Service is 'prompt and courteous' at breakfast, taken in a smallish basement room; it has freshly squeezed orange juice, 'good' coffee and bacon. There is a small, sunny roof terrace. 'High class; worth the money.'
