The Draycott

Converted from three brick-faced Edwardian houses on a quiet garden square, this luxury hotel, part of Adrian Gardiner's Mantis group, has 'lots of character', said inspectors. 'Not the least bit designerish; the decor gives a lived-in, though not at all shabby, feel.' The atmosphere is that of a 'comfortable country house', where efficient staff ensure that 'every request is rapidly met'. High-ceilinged public rooms have antiques and prints; the drawing room, where complimentary tea, champagne and hot chocolate are served, was refurbished by Nina Campbell in 2012. The absence of background music is applauded. Many bedrooms have a working fireplace; rear rooms have a view of the private garden and, in season, cherry trees in bloom. Kean, a large room, has 'a beautifully moulded ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows with heavy curtains, a table and chairs for meals'. Guests' names are written on a card and placed outside room doors 'like at an Edwardian house party'. There is no restaurant, but 24-hour room service is available. Breakfast, charged extra, is served in a 'small, light room'; it has loose-leaf teas and 'good marmalade, jam and honey'.
