Tudor Farmhouse  (Shortlist*)

Within a quiet village in the Royal Forest of Dean and close to Clearwell Castle, this converted farm has 'delightful views' and a 'lovely' cottage garden. Parts of the hotel, owned by Hari and Colin Fell, date back to the 13th century; period details include a spiral staircase, huge oak beams and an inglenook fireplace. 'The decor, staff and ambience were very pleasing.' Bedrooms are spread out across the main house, converted barn and cider house. Dinner, cooked by chef Blaine Reed, is 'very good'; local suppliers are listed on the menu. Wild food foraging trips can be arranged. 2 lounges, restaurant (background music in evenings). 14-acre grounds. Wi-Fi. Parking. Children and dogs welcomed. 23 bedrooms (some with a four-poster bed and spa bath). B&B £45--£97.50 per person; D,B&B £75--£125 per person
  • A very pleasant stay. The farmhouse, barn and outbuildings have been attractively converted but oak beams and original features have been retained. Our fairly small room at the front of the main farmhouse was up a steep, uneven, old wooden spiral staircase and would be unsuitable for the elderly and infirm, but there are easily accessed rooms in the outbuildings. The gardens were pretty and well maintained. The staff were helpful and friendly, the meals tasty and well presented.

  • Delightful stay in mid-grade room. Modern style in old building. Up-to-date bathroom with excellent ppower shower. Lovely cottage garden for tea and drinks, and a second hillside garden with charming views. A good dinner.

  • The decor, staff and ambience were pleasing. Good value for money. We were upgraded to the Cider House room and greeted with flowers and chocolates. Extremely comfortable bed; modern funishings blended well with the old-world beams. The blinds were thin. Modern bathroom fittings did not always live up to expectation. Lovely bath towels, and they abide by their environmental pledge to avoid unecessary laundry. The staff called us by name and were very efficient even when the hotel was busy. Some inconcistency in the cooking. Dinner was good, but the only change on the menu during our stay was the fish. Hari and Colin were around to greet us at the beginning of our visit.
