Treglos Hotel

In landscaped gardens above the sandy crescent of Constantine Bay, this traditional seaside hotel (built in 1895) has been extended and renovated by Jim and Rose Barlow, owners for 40 years. The manager is Jonathan Summerfield. 'The staff were outstandingly pleasant, and the head housekeeper addressed minor problems most efficiently,' say visitors this year. 'It is exceedingly well run and we hope to return.' There are changes in the restaurant: men are asked to wear a jacket or a tie in the evening, though this is relaxed to 'smart casual' during school holidays. Carl Quible is the new chef, serving English dishes on a daily-changing menu, perhaps Cornish turbot mousse, smoked salmon and yellow pepper dressing; seared pigeon breast, duck liver terrine, mustard dressing. The public rooms are 'peaceful and well furnished'; bedrooms are decorated in blue and beige: 'Our spacious room had lovely views of the bay.' Some rooms face the gardens. Children are well catered for with a den and table tennis. The Barlow family also owns Merlin Golf and Country Club (ten minutes' drive away). (Tony and Jenny Dawe)
  • The staff were outstandingly pleasant and helpful. Our room was comfortable and spacious, with lovely views. Public rooms are peaceful and well furnished, with open fires. The food was fresh and consistently excellent; service first class. The whole place is exceedingly well run.

  • Great place for teenagers: the venue is fabulous for the beach, tennis, walks, surfing, etc. Booking handled efficiently and charmingly. Treglos is moving with the times: the food was much improved, lighter and more contemporary, helpings more manageable. Restaurant service a bit more patchy, but good-humoured mostly. Our bedroom was lovely but the bathroom was tiny. Prompt room service.
