Coul House

A Georgian hunting lodge in attractive wooded grounds outside a small Highland village, this country hotel is thought 'a wonderful place to stay'. The 'helpful' resident owners, Susannah and Stuart Macpherson, are 'hands-on' hosts, say visitors this year. Their manager, Chris McLeod, is 'deft and attentive'. Inspectors were greeted by name in the large hall/sitting room. The bedrooms have 'good storage, excellent bedlinen and lighting'. 'My very comfortable room had an excellent new bed; I slept like a dream. My bathroom was adequate, but maybe due for a little modernisation.' The 'lovely' public rooms are 'beautifully proportioned'. In the 'stunning' octagonal dining room, chef Garry Kenley serves a contemporary Scottish menu, perhaps crab cakes, fennel and cashew salad; duck breast, star anise, spiced potato and cauliflower croquette. 'This is seriously good food; the service was excellent, the wine list interesting.' A 'delicious' cooked breakfast, taken in a 'handsome, high-ceilinged room', is chosen from a comprehensive menu and has home-baked bread, home-made marmalade, 'good' coffee. 'There is easy access to the east and west coasts and Inverness.' (Tony Hall, and others)
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is in beautiful countryside with sunning walks close by. The staff were friendly and professional. The food was outstanding. Tasty soups, beautifully cooked meat and fresh vegetables, scrummy traditional puddings. The bedrooms are large and adequate but in need of a coat of paint and the bathrooms are small.
