The River Usk runs through the grounds of this 19th-century Italianate building. A smart sporting hotel, it is run by Susie and James Suter (the third generation of the family owners). 'A very nice hotel with an efficient and friendly staff,' says a visitor this year. Another comment from a returning guest: 'Just as I remembered it, with an unspoiled charm and comfort.' Dinner is 'excellent and well served'. The chef, Karl Cheetham, subscribes to the Slow Food Movement, sourcing ingredients from as close as possible to the hotel. Typical dishes in his daily-changing menu: marinated sesame beef; lemon sole, seaweed purée, sage and Welsh beer sauce. Most of the 'immaculate' bedrooms are large; the best have a balcony overlooking the river. There are attractive indoor sitting areas, particularly the conservatory with a view down the valley. The hotel has a private stretch of the trout- and salmon-laden river: 'I enjoyed a productive evening fishing.' A packed lunch with Spanish tortilla was 'a welcome change'. 'We were given unstinting and accurate advice about the locality.' (Peter Anderson, David Walton)
  • A very nice hotel. We had a comfortable room at the front above the kitchen, which resulted in some cooking smells pervading the room and it could be a bit noisy late at night as people came and went. That said, it was 29 degrees and all windows were open. The food was good and plentiful. One day we had an excellent packed lunch. The River Usk runs through the grounds and I availed myself of a pleasant and productive evening fishing. The staff were all efficient and friendly, a credit to the hotel

  • Isn't it wonderful to open the GHG and spot a hotel just where you need to break your journey? It's even better when the hotel turns out to be perfect. First ,the beautiful setting in the hills with the River Usk below. Then, the warmest of welcomes by the receptionist who seemed genuinly pleased to see us. All the staff were effecient, well trained and delighted to serve us, and the warmth of their welcome matched the roaring log fires in the enormous fire places. The spacious, beautifully designed public rooms are decorated and furnished to the highest standards. We paid extra for a large twin bedroom which had comfy armchairs as well. The dinner was magnificent, even if only four mains to choose from.

  • Lovely family-run hotel in a wonderful setting. Owners very hands-on. Staff couldn't have been more helpful or tolerant with our three young children.
