Plas Dinas Country House

Standing in large grounds of trees and greenery, this guest house, run by owners Andy and Julian Banner-Price, celebrates its past as the once-upon-a-time country home of the Armstrong-Jones family. The Grade II listed gentleman's residence, which won a 2012 Visit Wales gold award, is 'elegant but by no means stuffy', its owners are 'amiable', 'witty' and 'keen to share their home'. After drinks on the terrace (in warm weather), guests may dine, by arrangement, in the gun room, which has a 400-year-old fireplace and a host of royal memorabilia. The large drawing room, with its open fire and 'comfy sofas', is ideal for tea and 'delicious home-made chocolate brownies'. The spacious, individually styled bedrooms overlook the vast garden to open countryside or the Menai Strait; they have original antiques alongside modern facilities (an iPod video dock). Andy Banner-Price's 'excellent' dinners of traditional recipes updated with a pinch of contemporary twists might include fish pie with a Welsh cheesy mash; a gooseberry and apple crumble tart. Two self-catering cottages in the grounds can host larger parties. (AA)
