'A good choice for those looking for a wonderful location, high standards and a warm welcome.' Praise from Guide inspectors in 2011 earns a full entry for Janette and Ian McKilligan's small hotel on a hillside on the Isle of Mull. This follows a 'hearty recommendation' by a reader who liked the 'immaculate' rooms and 'great views'. A 'handsome' sitting room on the first floor has full-height windows opening on to a balcony. 'Tea and very good cake were provided when we had settled.' Mr McKilligan is the chef, serving a no-choice four-course dinner at 7.30 pm at well-spaced tables. 'We enjoyed confit of Barbary duck leg with cranberry and pear chutney; a generous baked Gigha halibut with a lemon and ginger sauce; spot-on vegetables; imaginative pears poached in Marsala.' A bedroom at the back had 'good pine furnishings; a large wardrobe with free-range hangers; bedside lights were too short for reading'. Breakfast has 'an attractive choice of cereals; very good home-made yogurt; chunky slices of home-baked bread for toast'; a cooked dish of the day. (Stella Summers, and others)
