Y Goeden Eirin

Exceptional value (<£50)

César award in 2008

'What a treat. John and Eluned Rowlands are such engaging hosts; they represent the epitome of good hotel-keeping.' Praise in 2011 from the Guide's founding editor for this informal guest house in a hamlet on the edge of the Snowdonia national park. The bilingual couple (he is emeritus professor of Welsh at the University of Wales) believe in authenticity: 'Welsh is spoken at the hearth and with the dog, all our staff speak Welsh as a first language,' they say. 'They are fascinating about devolution, and are seriously green, but not in any oppressive way.' The renovated farm buildings have a mix of traditional and modern furnishings: 'The beautiful objets d'art and pictures are a pleasure. Everything about our room showed care and attention to the needs of the guest.' Mr Rowlands does most of the cooking, serving mainly Welsh or British dishes, eg, fish pie or navarin printanier (Welsh spring lamb stew). 'Very enjoyable home cooking with good local ingredients.' Breakfasts have freshly squeezed orange juice, home-made bread and preserves, a choice of cooked dishes. (Hilary Rubinstein)
