Blar na Leisg at Drumbeg House

In a 'visually stunning environment', by a loch on the remote Assynt peninsula, this small restaurant-with-rooms is run by owners Anne and Eddie Strachan. The 'extraordinary' couple are 'charming, attentive hosts', say inspectors. 'She loves to cook, but also to talk'; he runs front-of-house with 'courtesy'. They have 'gutted and redesigned' the interiors of the stone dwelling: 'The impression is of lightness (pale walls, oak floors) brought alive by vivid colours (curtains, pictures).' Log fires burn in the spacious hall/dining room and the sitting room, which has squashy sofas. Wooden stairs lead to the bedrooms: 'Ours had restful colours, quality fabrics; an extremely comfortable bed; good reading lights; huge towels in the shower room, masses of hot water.' Mrs Strachan, 'a gifted cook', discusses guests' likes and dislikes for her no-choice dinner menu, which might include poached cod in a fish broth, wantons, asparagus, sugar snap peas. Breakfast, 'served at a time to suit us', has fresh and dried fruit, 'racks of home-made bread, croissants, wonderful Caithness bacon and scrambled eggs'.

  • Like staying with friends without having to lift a finger. The bed was big and comfy, the bathroom was excellent. The decor was classy, simple and modern. Dinners were superb but never before nine o'clock
